Nicky's Christmas Wish
----------------------

Nicky's Christmas Wish is a story about a young boy, an impossible
wish, and lessons of love and courage.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it. If you
do, please share it with a friend.Sunday December 17, 2006 | permalink

Cat Picture of the Week: Mandy
------------------------------

This is Mandy, 9 years old playing with her toy duck. We got
her from a cat foster home after she was abandoned. It was love at
first sight. She is a loving lap cat and gets along great with her
buddy, Music who is 2 years old. Mandy is a mix of Maine Coon and
Persian.

Cats Pictures of the Week are selected from general photo submittals.
(I do not accept photos submitted specifically for "Cat Picture of the
Week.") Mandy's picture is also featured in the December Cats Gallery.

You may send your own photo, using the guidelines on the Photo
Submittal page. Be sure to write a paragraph or so about the cat, at
least two or three sentences. Our galleries have space for 2500
characters, including spaces, so don't be afraid to tell us about your
cat within those parameters.Saturday December 16, 2006 | permalink |

Help Homeless Cats During the Holidays
--------------------------------------

It's still not too late to do a little something to help homeless cats
in shelters and rescues. If you'd thought about buying a cell phone
case, or tree ornament for a friend, some of the agencies listed in
bullet #1 have expedited delivery. On the other paw, Homelessness
knows no holidays, as far as the cats are concerned, and you can
actually do all of these things year-round.

The winter holidays are a very personal time, which we set aside for
enjoying our family, close friends, and of course, our cats, who are
also treasured members of our families. But it is a time of year when
our universal homeless cats could use a little extra love, too. Here
are some ways you can demonstrate that love:

* Buy Humane Gifts for Your Loved Ones
I've received the gifts I purchased, and they are of wonderful
quality. The fact that they are helping support the cause of
homeless cats makes them even more meaningful to the recipients
and to me.

* Buy some Kitty Blankies for your own cats, or for shelter cats.
Fondly known as "Lance's Blankies," these are the softest,
cuddliest blankies any kitty has ever experienced. I purchased a
number of Lance's Blankies for gifts last Christmas and will do so
again this year. Lance and his lovely lady, Laura, donate every
penny of their profit from blankie sales to a neighboring no-kill
shelter, along with donations of blankies for the cats at the
shelter. You'll also find some very beautiful jewelry on their
site, handcrafted by the talented Laura.

* Buy a gift from the Crazy Cat Ladys Society
All profits are donated to Best Friend's Animal Society

* Shop at The Siamese Store
Proceeds go to help support the Siamese Rescue Center

Oh Give me a Home Where the Cats (Do or Don't) Roam
---------------------------------------------------

Well, in Oak Bay, B.C. the council, in a split vote, decided that a
proposed bylaw amendment for fining cat owners who allow their cats to
roam, would be excessive, according to the Oak Bay News. The resident
who proposed the bylaw was worried about health risks associated with
cat excrement.

Opponents pointed out that the cats are performing a service by
keeping the Oak Bay rat population at bay (pun not intended), and
homeowners who are concerned about cat feces can use other means of
discouraging their trespassing, such as animal repellants.

What's Your Opinion? Would you support a similar law? Cast your vote
in the poll. Friday December 15, 2006 | permalink | comments (7)

Cats & Their Pets Picture Gallery
---------------------------------

Brand New Cats Picture Gallery

For centuries, cats have been happy to live in harmony with dogs,
rabbits, goldfish and other domesticated critters, as these pictures
with attest to. However, cat lovers all know that a cat is the sole
owner of his or her household and every living being who resides in
it. The typical cat will look at the household dog and think "Mine!",
which should surprise no one.

Enjoy these photos submitted by readers of cats with their "pets,"
then submit your own photos of cats living in harmony with the pets
they love, using the information requested in the Photo Guidelines.
Please use "Cats and Pets" as the subject of your email.

Essential Oils and Cats: A Potentially Toxic Mix
------------------------------------------------

Aromatherapy, potpourri, and the use of essential oils have been
popular for decades. What kitchen hasn't delighted visitors with the
fragrant scent of apple pie spices, whether from the oven or from a
pot of simmering potpourri? Recent introduction of "Plug-in" room
fresheners has made it easier to keep your home smelling fresh, and
essential oils such as peppermint, simmering in a colorful potpourri
mix, add pizzaz to the holiday ambience.

But how safe is that peppermint potpourri? In recent years, compelling
evidence has accumulated that essential oils can be toxic to cats,
whether taken internally, applied to the skin, or simply inhaled.
Learn more, and read the labels to make sure that plug-in does not
contain potentially harmful essential oils.Thursday December 14, 2006

Hot Forum Topic: Most Affectionate Cat Breed
--------------------------------------------

Yours truly posted:

I got an email this morning from someone who asked me to make a "Top
Picks" list of the most affectionate cat breeds. Obviously, "Moggies"
will be at the top of the list. But I'd like input from people who
either have purebred cats or have experience with them. I could check
the profiles from each registry, but personal experience is always
more meaningful.

Photo Call: Comical Cats Pictures
---------------------------------

While we all know that cats think of themselves as "gods" and
above our all-too-human enjoyment of the funnier things in life,
there's no denying that at times cats can be outrageous comics. Our
Jaspurr will sometimes, out of the blue, race around the room with his
tail curved up at the base, then fly onto a small cat tree, sometimes
sending it crashing into the slider. We never fail to roar at his
antics, which brings out even more of his comical activities. (Who
says cats don't have a sense of humor?)

The accompanying photo reminded me that we need a Comical Cats Picture
Gallery. As an example, this is Blondie, a male Himalayan cat, doing
his impression of "Air Blondie." You needn't limit yourself to "flying
cats" photos, though, but send me your best examples of comical cat
pictures. The only thing I don't want is "staged" photos, i.e. cats
wearing silly hats, etc. They are always the best, just cats being
cats at their funniest.

Oh yes, you should know the drill now, but if not, you must observe
the Photo Guidelines or your picture won't be accepted.

FAQ of the Day: Why does my cat paw my legs while in my lap?
------------------------------------------------------------

A reader asks:
Our cat climbs or jumps into our lap and begins to "paw" on our legs.
It is not scratching, it's more like kneeding bread. What's that all
about?

My wife is fascinated by this behaviour, and has to know why!

Top 10 Gifts for "Crazy Cat Ladies"
-----------------------------------

Female cat lovers are the easiest people in the world to buy
gifts for. They always love anything and everything related to cats,
whether it be cat-themed jewelry, books about cats, calendars
featuring cats or cat-related home decor. Here are my top picks,
updated for this season, to help you with ideas for your "crazy cat
lady" friends, or for yourself, this holiday season, or any time of
year.

The t-shirt pictured here portrays sleeping Joey kitten with the
motto, "Life is Tough - Then You Nap," a good reminder to every woman
who tries to do too much. You'll find lots of other great gifts,
including a darling Cheshire Cat watch and a great 2007 "Cat Naps"
calendar.
